PLAY &LEARN

PREFACE

The material that we are sending is drawn from a project of a CLIL-based activity named Play & Learn, which I realised with the Physical Education teacher for two groups of 13-to-14 year-old students from Schiaffini Lower Secondary School, during this school year.
The activity consisted in teaching a sport in English. Volleyball is very popular with Italian teenagers  and is one of the most practised sports by both boys and girls, then it is perfect for mixed classes of students. Moreover it is easy in a school jim, because it doesn’t require many implements.
Most of the practice was carried out by dividing each group into two teams, so as to create a competition within each group, and keep score. The teaching process started with a refresh of the parts of the human body, matched with a relay race, and went on with some theory and drills on the follwing subjects: skills, the court, game rules, players’ roles, and scoring. A further topic was shown on the whiteboard and concerned the ideal diet.
Once all of the contents were exhausted, each team was divided into sub-groups and each sub-group  had to work on one of the subjects above, by doing reading comprehensions, multiple choice tests, clozes, match exercises etc. In the last lesson each sub-group performed a presentation of their subject to the others for peer assessment.
Here is an excerpt of the whole work.
